On July 25, 2009, for the first time ever African Global Roots brought together Africans of many artistic dicipline for a celebration of African arts and culture as represented in the state of Minnesota. The evening showcased craft sales by many vendors in the area; a dynamic spoken word performance by the Jamaican poet Damion Rhudd, a jumping hip hop performance by Ghana's own M.anifest, of course toe stumping west African drumming and dance performance by Hayor Bibimma African Dance Company. As African Global Roots always do, elders were honored, and the stage passed to the new generation of African artist.
In additon to the performances, attendees were treated to the beautiful couture of not one, but two up and fast coming African designers beautifully blending the line between traditional and nouvo African wear. The young ladies and gentlemen of Bothdol Fashion and Utamaduniwear catwalked into history and usher a new era in African arts dipped in [American] Midwestern sensibility.
